On the eve of Memorial Day, on behalf of my bandmates in Idiom, I'd like to remind folks that the holiday is about the unofficial start of Summer - but also about remembering those military personnel who perished in foreign wars. As someone who has worked for 35 years with a number of Catholic agencies dedicated to housing the homeless and the mentally ill I'd like to add that we need to not only remember but help veterans suffering from mental illness, physical illness (from war wounds, depleted uranium and burn pit contamination, Agent Orange exposure and nuclear fallout from Fukushima) as well as veterans who are homeless. I am from a military family and am a former military husband so the plight of our veterans is something I think of often.
